MELTRIC DISCONNECT PLUGS, RECEPTACLES, SWITCHES & DECONTACTORS

Each device incorporates a switching feature that safely de-energizes the plug before it can be withdrawn. Enclosed arc chambers, dead front construction, and 100 kA short circuit ratings further enhance protection from arc flash injury.

SAFETY

Safety is the number one specification for all products designed, manufactured and sold by Meltric. Most Meltric products including all Decontactor ™ Series plugs and receptacles feature dead front construction which eliminates the possibility of access to live parts to all but the correct mating plug. Meltric Decontactor Series plugs and receptacles function as a switch and are safe to routinely make and break under full load. They are the only devices in the world that are UL listed as “Switch rated plugs and receptacles”.

When a Decontactor is connected, there is "total safety."

Pressing the pawl causes the Decontactor to break the circuit. The plug is ejected to its rest position.

A simple quarter turn of the plug allows it to be totally withdrawn from the receptacle. This is done in complete safety as the circuit is already dead.

The plug and the receptacle are separated. The safety shutter on the receptacle prevents access to live parts.

Most Meltric products including all Decontactor™ Series plugs and receptacles are designed with dead front construction to eliminate the possibility of access to live parts to all but the correct mating plug after insertion into the receptacle. Since there is no access to live parts, Meltric products are exempt from the new NFPA 70E requirements

Quick Equipment Changeouts

The quick, safe and flexible connection capabilities of Meltric Decontactor™ Series plugs and receptacles makes them the ideal choice for plug and play and modular process applications. Modular factories commonly use Meltric to connect to electrical drops for quick connection/disconnection and rearrangement capabilities with total safety.

Using Meltric Decontactor Series Motor Plugs to connect motors and other equipment instead of hard-wiring can help reduce equipment change-out and downtime costs by as much as 50%. Pre-wiring replacement motors with Meltric plugs eliminates the time, cost and hassles of needing an electrician to do wiring during change-outs and perform associated safety related work practices. Most importantly, you get your process back on-line in a fraction of the time.

Meltric uses solid silver-nickel (85/15) butt contacts that are similar to those used in contactors and switchgear. The combination of the outstanding electrical properties of silver and the excellent mechanical properties of nickel provide many advantages relative to common brass contacts or silver-plated brass contacts.

Cost Savings

When you buy a Meltric plug and receptacle you effectively get the switch for free. That’s because Meltric Decontactor™ Series plugs and receptacles are UL, CSA, and IEC switch rated. They are safe to make and break under full load, eliminating the need to purchase auxiliary mechanical interlocks or disconnect switches. Plus, connection flexibility allows easy “line of sight” location.

When Meltric Decontactor Series plugs and receptacles are used to connect motors and other equipment instead of hard wiring or using pin and sleeve devices there is

• Less man hours needed to change out equipment.

• Lower hourly labor costs (work can be performed by a mechanic instead of an electrician).

• No need to don special personal protective equipment (PPE).

The contacts on Meltric plugs and receptacles are covered by a five year limited warranty. The durable construction of our products allows them to last even in harsh environments.

Long Life

Meltric products feature spring loaded butt style pressure contacts similiar to those used in contactors and switchgear.

Spring loading of the contacts, via a coil spring, provides constant pressure and performance over thousands of operations.

Spring loaded plug and receptacle disengagement provides a consistently fast disconnection, reducing the probability of arcing.

ARC FLASH

PROTECTION

Decontactors are a combination plug, receptacle and disconnect switch. With Decontactors installed, workers can safely and easily make and break electrical connections under full load. The receptacle's dead front prevents access to live parts and thus, exempts workers from needing to follow NFPA 70E specified work procedures associated with performing energized electrical work.

Spring Assisted Terminal Screws

Many factors can contribute to the loosening of terminal screws. These include:

Rough handling that frequently occurs in routine use

Vibration due to nearby and/or connected equipment

Thermal cycling due to the intermittent current passage

The settling and yielding of multi-strand conductor that occurs after tightening

The normal yielding of solid copper conductors that results from the pressure of the terminal screw

CODE COMPLIANCE

NEC

The NEC requires motors to have readily accessible “line of sight” disconnects that are either an approved switch or a properly rated plug and receptacle.

With their unique ability to withstand high in-rush currents, Meltric Decontactor™ Series plugs and receptacles are the perfect choice for the line of sight disconnect required on motors and other inductive loads. DS, DSN and DB Decontactors are horsepower rated and pass testing at the 6xFLA current level required relative to locked rotor conditions.

NFPA 70E

NFPA 70E requires that any person working near live parts must wear protective clothing and equipment based on the calculated incident energy exposure level or alternatively on NFPA’s listed minimum requirements.

Once installed, Meltric Decontactor Series plugs and receptacles simplify compliance to NFPA 70E requirements. Their dead front construction eliminates the possibility of access to live parts so there is no need to don personal protective equipment when changing out motor or other equipment connected with Meltric Decontactors.

UL/CSA Listings Meltric Decontactors are the world's only UL and CSA switch rated plugs and receptacles. Not only do they meet performance test requirements for UL 1682/CSA C22.2 No.182.1 (to which competitive pin and sleeve devices are listed), but Decontactors also meet performance test requirements for products listed to UL Subject 2682 "Switch-Rated Plugs and Receptacles", as well as, CSA C22.2 No.4 "Enclosed and Dead Front Switches" and CSA C22.2 No.14 "Industrial Control Equipment." They are approved by UL and CSA for use in motor circuit disconnect/switching applications and in branch circuit disconnect/switching applications.

UL SWITCH RATED PLUG & RECEPTACLE

UL Subject 2682 is a new standard that UL has established for products, like Meltric's Decontactor Series, that provide the performance and capabilities of disconnect switching capabilities from UL 98 ( Enclosed & Dead Front Switches) and UL 508 (Industrial Control Equipment) with the plug & receptacle requirements in UL 1682.
